The Institute for Scientific and Technological Research of Universidade Atlântica (ISTR) is a multidisciplinary research unit, dedicated to the promotion and support of scientific and technological research in the scientific areas of the University, enhancing the multidisciplinary training of its teaching and research staff and the dissemination of the knowledge produced.

This is a concern of Universidade Atlântica since its inception in 1996, when it was shaped its Research Centre. The restructuring of this Research Centre into Institute for Scientific and Technological Research aims at increasing the proximity of research areas with the scientific areas of the University. This restructuring process is accompanied by a significant dynamics of building and deepening partnerships with national and international academic and research institutions.

Therefore the ISTR develops national and international multidisciplinary R&D projects organised into three main areas:

  • Global Change, focusing the analysis on the interactions of society, abiotic and biotic environment, and highlighting the feedbacks between human and natural subsystems;
  • Business and Information Technologies focusing on planning, development and maintenance of information systems in order to improve the competitiveness of Businesses;
  • Education and Public Health focusing in the areas of diagnosis, health promotion, disease prevention and environmental health.

Putting the creation, transmission and dissemination of culture, knowledge, science and technology at the service of the development of society is a central goal of the ISTR.

The ISTR is also the current host for two prestigious organisations, the National Committee for IGBP-Global Change and the European Alliance of Global Change Research Committees.
